Description
This is a composite photo. Sometimes it snows late in Madera Canyon. This snow fell on March 16, 2006, and the photo was taken March 19th. The hummingbird, on the other hand, was photographed April 4, 2010, in the same area in Madera Canyon. This species does arrive by March 16th, and feeding is important for extending the range of this species into southern Arizona in the sky islands there, particularly when there is abnormally late snow as there was in 2006. I wanted to put this composite together to show what really cannot be seen in one photograph: there are few or no flowers blooming at this altitude, about 1 mile high at ground level in Madera Canyon. The mountain Mount Hopkins, in the Santa Rita Mountains, South of Tucson, Arizona.
