Description
Well, hummingbirds are my favorite models. But their poses are, frankly, random. Naturally, I tend to select the "pretty" ones. However, as my portfolio grows, sometimes some of the others get my attention. This guy is a beautiful bird, and I have him in some beautiful poses. How do I know it's the same bird? Well, it's because he has a black growth on the left side of his beak, near the base of his beak. (That's on the right side of the beak in the photo.) Usually I retouch it, so you don't see it. Here, it just adds to the content I'm reading into the image.
Anyway, this "shrug" pose is not the most graceful pose that I've ever captured, to say the least. He is blinking because, just like you, if I keep taking his photo with a flash camera, he hears it click before the flash, and so it conditions him to blink.
Also, there are some other interesting details in the photo. His orbital feathers, we would normally call them eyelashes, show up quite clearly, particularly in contrast to the bright background on the right side of the image. Also, there is a row of feathers just above the flight primaries on the right side wing, (his left), which are sticking out in an odd manner, sort of like flaps or spoilers.
Last of all, he looks to me like a stereotypical French man, showing his ennui with an expressive shrug. Perhaps I should add a beret to this photo. But he's not French, he's a native born American who winters in Central America.
Anyway, I dedicate this photo to humble common men, women, and birds everywhere. They aren't always ready to pose for the cover of a fashion magazine, but they work hard, love their families, and have strong hearts.
