Description
The Old Cape Henry Lighthouse was the first lighthouse built by the US Federal government, beginning in 1792. It is 26 feet in diameter at its base, and 16 feet at its top. The tower's foundation was built with Aquia Creek sandstone , the same kind of stone that was used in building the House. The top of the tower, the part you can see in this photograph, was built from stronger Rappahannock Sandstone.
in 1881, a newer lighthouse was build nearby, because of concerns about the stability of the older lighthouse.
Both lighthouses within the boundaries of Fort Story, an Army base which specializes as a training facility for logistics-over-the-shore operations using amphibious equipment. Camping in an adjacent park, there were numerous helicopter flights early in that night that were obviously associated with this mission.
When entering the fort to see the lighthouse, you will be subjected to a very detailed inspection, and no alcohol, weapons, or ammunition are permitted.
