Incredible photos, Gregory!! I can't get over the detail in these. If you had one good shot I would call it lucky - but they are all amazing! You are very talented! v/f Thank you for your nice comment on my painting.

Gregory Scott replied:

Well, yes and no. I have spent about a month each spring since 2003 (except one year) in southeast Arizona in the spring during peak migration season. This is where and there are the most species in one place at one time. And I'm equipped specially for hummingbird photography, and spend virtually every waking hour photographing, adjusting, photographing, and readjusting. On the other hand, I have virtually no control over the pose. I've shot many thousands of photos, and only posted the best poses. So the luck is in the pose, but there is a lot of observation of bird behavior and experimentation into technique to get these shots.

Artist's Description

I photographed this rare hummingbirdbird as a day visitor to Ash Canyon Bed and Breakfast. It's a wonderful birding location, and photographer friendly. If you love birds, you should do the SE AZ birding trail, and make each canyon in Sierra Vista AZ one of your stops. Ramsey, Ash, and Miller. Beatty's Orchard in Miller Canyon, too.

Anyway, back to this bird, he's not very shy, and easy to see if he's acclimated at the feeder where you see him. I've had people say that the photograph looks distorted, but it is not. His head/neck appears bigger because his gorget (throat decoration is much longer than most other US hummingbirds.

Anyway, I like the bright alert look on this bird, and its rarity makes me value this image highly among my collection.

About Gregory Scott

Gregory Scott

I'm a photographer, though sometimes I experiment in other media. My mother was an artist, and on school holidays, when she had classes at the art museum, I got to spend entire days roaming the galleries of the Cincinnati Art Museum. My twin sister is an artist, and my father took up photography about the time I did, when I was in college. I'm also a former machine tool programmer, database analyst, and mathematics and physics teacher, and those things undoubtedly have impact on my perceptions as well, as do my Christian perspective and philosophy. My favorite photographic subjects are hummingbirds, other birds in flight, and scenic beauty as seen in wilderness places, the national parks, and rural locations. As my physical health and...
