Description
This was not a photograph, it was "drawn" in Photoshop. It supposedly should contain the colors re, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, in a smooth continuous progression. I represented the ends as a gradient to black because the colors beyond the visible spectrum are (gasp!) invisible to the human eye.
For what it's worth, there may be some technical difficulties with this image, as they relate to the perception of the human eye, which is limited to red, blue, and green, and the reproduction of colors in pigments for printing, which is based on combinations, primarily of Cyan, Yellow, Magenta, and Black. This image was uploaded using the Adobe RGB1998 Color space. Things to note:
The bright narrow band in red. You would expect a bright band where two RGB colors mix at 100%: Yellow and Cyan. Another technical question concerns accuracy of the color reproduced beyond blue, in the indigo and violet. This colors look quite inaccurate to my eye, and I don't quite understanding how mixing colors of lower frequencies than blue can produce colors that the eye see as "beyond blue". It's a bit of a paradox to me, and may explain the problems in the color perception. Comments on these color reproduction and perception issues are very welcome!
