Description
In 1878, congress appropriate $75,000 to replace the old Cape Henry Lighthouse. The new light was built from large cast-iron plates bolted together, the tallest of this design in the USA. This lighthouse is now automated, and continues in service today. It is quite close to the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse, but only the old lighthouse is open to the public.
The red glass section in the light indicates a direction from which it is not safe for seagoing ships to approach the channel. You can clearly see the beautiful Fresnel lens in the lighthouse.
Both lighthouses within the boundaries of Fort Story, an Army base which specializes as a training facility for logistics-over-the-shore operations using amphibious equipment. Camping in an adjacent park, there were numerous helicopter flights early in that night that were obviously associated with this mission.
When entering the fort to see the lighthouse, you will be subjected to a very detailed inspection, and no alcohol, weapons, or ammunition are permitted.
