Description
This panorama of Owens Lake in California is memorable to me for a wide variety of reasons. (Pun intended.) First, on this windy and rainy day, alkali mineral dust, and perhaps talc, were blowing off of the semi-dry lake bed in beautiful white clouds, which caused intense stinging of the eyes lager when we drover on the edge of he cloud as we approached the small town of Keeler on CA 190, the Nadeau Trail. The mountains on the right are called the Talc City Hills, which is why I say that the dust may contain talc, and undoubtedly many alkali minerals. If you look in the lake, you can see mining equipment, which would be visible at a large print size. From looking at a map, I think that you may be able to see several small towns in this photograph: Lone Pine, Swansea, Alico, Dolomite, Mock, and also the Natural Soda Products Company, Cerro Gordo Mines, etc
I have another version of this photo which is a wide angle view of the lake, shot from several miles farther away. It's not such a long, skinny photo.
