Description
These outbuildings were located in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. These historic reconstructions are seen from a modernistic perspective as I stitched together a panoramic series of photographs as a cylindrical projection, giving the main outbuilding a beautiful curved appearance, yet on each side, other buildings seem to retain an entirely normal perspective. I was very much drawn to this treatment by the sensously curved slats in the ventilation grate under the eaves. I also enjoyed the mossy landscape of the shingles on the roof. They're replacing authentic wooden shingles with composite shingles, which are much easier to maintain, but don't have this same natural patina.
If you look at the detail in the ventilation grate, you will see that it is screened with cheesecloth fabric. I believe that this was a sort of spring house, used for cool, bug free storage of food. There was a smokehouse beyond the main building in the image, and a kitchen just behind the camera.
By the way, the reddish paint under the whitewash, and on the main house is a traditional paint color. This paint color is based on a historic milk-paint formula using natural ingredients which could include blood from slaughtered animals, linseed oil, lime, casein from milk, turpentine, citrus oils, chalk and hemp oil.
