Description
This landing male acorn woodpecker was photographed at Cave Creek, near Portal, Arizona. However, the background photo is from Yosemite Falls in California where this woodpecker is also common. The female wears a black stripe between the red and white on her forehead.
The bird was landing on a rock (digitally removed) to get a peanut. The wings are not blurry because I used high speed flash photography techniques.
This species of bird is quite social, and the birds cooperate in many ways. I saw them mob together to drive away competing Mexican Jays, for example, while I was in Arizona. They're quite smart, also, and can be seen "playing" sometimes.
