There is a really interesting "face" of a man in this photo. He's a heavy cheeked man looking up to the right from near the center. Unfortunately, this is the much like a musical earworm. Once you've looked at it that way, you can't not see it that way any more, and it's no longer possible to see it either in a fully realistic or fully abstract sense. Sorry about that.

Yes, it is not a uniform fine sandstone. There are also small pebbles up to maybe 1/4 inch in size, with a few rare larger sizes. These pebbles are often in layers, and can add swirls of texture in the sandstone. So not only is the sandstone eroded in swirls, but also the dunes are built, eroded, rebuilt and frozen into petrified swirls, including the layers of pebbles.
