Description
A subtle detail in this photograph is the spider web on the azaleas. Males don't have anything to do with nesting, other than fertilizing the female. The female builds the nest, incubates the eggs, and raises the chicks. One major nest building material is spider webs. They may eat smaller spiders, but sometimes a larger spider may eat a hummingbird caught in a strong web.
One thing that makes this fun for me is that they will sometimes fly around my head, and pluck my white beard and the finer white hair on my head. So fine white human hair can be a good hummingbird attractant, and make nest building easier for the female.
Another thing I particularly like in this photo is the pollen on the bird's beak.
Though fairly seamless, this is a composite photograph, which is easy to tell by those "in the know". The bird is from one photo, and everything else is from another photo.
