Description
Darkling Beetle, Eleodes obscurus, or pehaps a close relative of that species. This looks like Eleodes Obscurus, but with a much coarser pitted rear end and thorax.
In the western USA this beetle is called a "stink bug" because when they are bothered they put
their rear end up and make a bad smell. I've read that there is a mouse that will catch them, stick their backside into the ground, and then eat the bug from the top down. Mammal power!
I photographed this beetle right on the edge of the south rim of the Grand Canyon.
