Description
Well, it's a week after July 4th, and so that must be why I thought of that line from the national anthem when I was editing this photo, and thinking about the reflection of the gorget (throat) feathers on the lower side of the beak of this rufous hummingbird. I see this in a lot of my photos, actually, and also light reflected from red hummingbird feeders or flowers, too. But in this case, I think it's just the glare off of the gorget. All the dark spots on his breast are very likely to be missing feathers in about 8 spots, resulting from hits by other hummingbirds during territorial combat.
